7 Quick Takes Friday

7.

I am working on my posts about Catholic Social Teaching, but it is slow going. I managed to forget quite a bit in just 3 years…so I am having to do more re-reading than I thought I would. Slowly, but surely, they are getting done.

6.

In the meantime I am excited to announce that I am profiling Sr. Helen Prejean for Catholic Speaker Month.

I had the privilege to meet St. Helen (and even introduce her to the crowd) at a large speaking event in college. She is a firecraker and a woman who has spent many years trying to live the gospel. I’m exicted to profile her on Fumbling Toward Grace and Ignitum Today.

I’m shooting for Tuesday to publish.

In other exciting news, we are headed to my old stomping grounds this weekend. Chicago!

We’re going to visit my dear friend Elizabeth who writes at Coppertop Kitchen and who is expecting her daughter in November. So excited for them! She and her husband are Maggie’s godparents, and they haven’t seen her in over a year so it’s going to be a great re-union weekend.

I try not to hold it against her that she’s a Michigan fan. At least her husband cheers for the right team.

The right team being:

These guys.

Maggie is enjoying preschool quite a bit. At least, after the first five minutes. She gets so anxious about it, she actually starts crying when we get in the car and she knows where we are going, and she cries until about five minutes after I drop her off.

But, her teachers said then she loves it, has a great time, and doesn’t cry again.

She does the same thing with bath time too. She cries in anticipation of it, but once she gets into the water and starts playing, she loves it.

I’m not sure what that means, but I know she loves school once she gets going.

2.

Has anyone used the Catholic Icing Preschool cirriculum?

I am thinking of getting it in the winter when she turns two and doing it maybe one day a week or so to supplement what she’s getting at preschool.

Also, I want to start doing faith formation at home with her, since she won’t be able to start any kind of CCD until she’s kindergarten age, at least I think that’s when it starts for our parish.

I was wondering if any of you have used it and if you liked it. Or if not that, what have you used for a pre-school religion cirriculum?

1.

Does anyone else miss the West Wing as much as I do?

Have a great weekend and Go Irish! Beat Michigan!

  1. I do really like it because it forces me to teach the kids things I would maybe, eventually get around to explaining to them. But, for example, this week we did the letter C. C is for crucifix. We talked about that, how Jesus died for our sins, we made our own crucifixes out of popcicle sticks and an image of Christ copied from the book, and we went around our house counting all the crucifixes we have. Never would have done that without the book! I do use some supplemental things and write a kind of cirriculum (like I want them to know our address, phone number, their full names, etc AND I work on colors and shapes with my 3 year old). I am, however, very interested in the preschool book Grace and Dwija recently talked about.

  2. Thank you for writing and sharing. Go Irish. Atticus’ grandpa Murphy was an Irish fan. How can you not be with that last name. I love the movie Rudy. I wish that I had watched West Wing when it was on. I think it was too early in the evening to fit my schedule. Maybe someday I can find a way to watch it. It would be a wonderful relief from all the crime shows currently on.

  3. We must have been at ND at the same time, because I remember that event with Sr. Helen Prejean – she was amazing! I have never forgotten how she said, “You know how we’re supposed to visit those in prison, and lots of times you’ll hear homilies where the priest will wax eloquent about how this can mean we’re supposed to spend time with people who are imprisioned by this or that metaphoric prison – well, sometimes it means we’re SUPPOSED TO VISIT PEOPLE IN PRISON!” Wow!
